Opening this concert is Bernstein's Overture to Candide, which the BPYO will be playing for the first time. It was last played by the senior Boston Philharmonic Orchestra in 2001 at the Jazzical Gala.
Violinist, composer and conductor Guy Braunstein returns along with cellist Zvi Plesser to join the BPYO for Brahms's great Double Concerto. This formidable concerto, the composer's last, finds Brahms in a mood that is deeply expressive, but also austere. It is a piece that demands the greatest maturity from its performers, which is exactly what it is going to receive from these two amazing musicians.
We finish with the great Fifth Symphony of Prokofiev: a wily yet oddly profound work in which the composer fully embraces Soviet dictates about the nature and purpose of art while still almost miraculously maintaining the integrity of his own personal voice.
