2007-2008 Season, Concert 3
February 21, 23 & 24, 2008
Shostakovich: Cello Concerto No. 1 Natalia Gutman, cello Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 "Pathetique"
The third concert will bring one of the greatest instrumentalists in the world, the Russian cellist Natalia Gutman, playing the Shostakovich First Cello Concerto. She is literally a living legend in her native country, but she travels abroad only rarely, so opportunities to hear her are few. It is a great privilege to be able to perform Shostakovich’s searing concerto with this profound and selfless artist. Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique Symphony seems to me to be the perfect complement to the concerto – the one a devastating portrayal of persecution in Soviet society, the other a heartbreaking dramatization of personal loss and personal courage in pre-Soviet Russia.
