2007-2008 Season, Concert 2
November 15, 17 & 18, 2007
Schubert: Symphony No. 8 "Unfinished" Bruckner: Symphony No. 5
The second program couldn’t present a greater contrast to the first – two masterpieces that lie at the very heart of the European mainstream. Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony, deservedly one of the most popular of all classical compositions, is a work I have conducted many times, always with the deepest affection and always amazed anew at its endless beauty. On the other hand, I will be conducting Bruckner’s magnificent, heaven-storming Fifth Symphony for the first time. The idea of programming it has come up time and again over the years, but I may actually have been a little intimidated by its overwhelming grandeur. It is likely that you have never heard the Bruckner Fifth in live performance. I can promise you that it will be a lasting memory.
