For the opening concert we are presenting our most unusual program ever. The orchestra is giving the American premiere of Svara-Yantra, a dazzling concerto for violin and tabla by local composer Shirish Korde that combines elements of Western music with instrumental techniques, rhythms, and scales peculiar to the music of India. It was composed especially for our beloved concertmistress Joanna Kurkowicz, who has performed it in Europe and Asia. It’s enthralling – I’m completely in love with it, and I know everyone who hears it next year will be spellbound. Complementing the concerto are works equally rich in color and in national identity – on the one hand, Ginastera’s exuberant, multi-faceted Variaciones concertantes, Argentinean in its flavor, and on the other, a world apart, Musorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.
