In 1981, Ed Meltzer graduated from New England Conservatory of Music as a student of Vic Firth, then Timpanist of the Boston Symphony. Ed immediately gained employment in Florida as the Timpanist of the Florida Philharmonic in Tampa followed by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Caracas, Venezuela. Upon his return to the States, Ed found temporary employment at a company selling printing paper to the top printers throughout the United States. While at work in business, Ed played with the Boston pops for one full season and, in 1985, rejoined the Boston philharmonic as their timpanist. In 1986, Ed joined his father's firm and became a partner in 1988 and sole owner in 2001.

Ed Meltzer is also the Principal Timpani of the Boston Philharmonic.
